Inverewe Gardens are reached within 2 hours drive – a famous garden begun by Osgood Mackenzie making use of the Gulf Stream.
Handa Island, just 1 ¾ hours drive north, a bird reserve where you can see breeding seabirds including puffins and arctic skua. Boat trips leave every 15 minutes in season. http://scottishwildlifetrust.org.uk/reserve/handa-island/
Lochinver and Kylesku
A drive north through Inverpolly Nature reserve along the ‘wee mad road’ takes you to the fishing village of Lochinver . Visit the famous Achins Bookshop along the way and Highland Stoneware amongst others. Boat trips from Kylesku go inland up the sea loch to visit Britain’s longest waterfall or to Kerracher Gardens.
The village of Ullapool is 25 miles from Achiltibuie (45 mins drive). Shops, restaurants, museum, art gallery, swimming pool, tennis courts etc.
The drive north provides a spectacular journey through an expansive landscape. Cape Wrath is at the farthest north-west corner of Britain but is not easily accessible by car – the MOD still owns vast tracts of land there. In the season, you can take a boat trip to the Cape or go by minibus – see http://www.capewrath.org.uk/ However, a visit to Durness, the village nearest to the Cape, is well worthwhile.
